The dual-mass flywheel decouples torsional vibrations generated by the engine from the rest of the drivetrain, significantly increasing driving comfort whilst preventing transmission damage. It serves as the contact surface for the clutch disc and should be inspected for grooves or cracks whenever the clutch is replaced. A worn flywheel will cause jerky engagement and vibrations whilst driving.
