The ignition coils on modern water-cooled Porsche boxer engines are mounted directly on the valve cover and connected to the spark plug connector. These coils are prone to failure due to high temperature fluctuations inherent to the 996 and 986 models. Each coil is individually replaceable, with different variants available depending on model year and engine type.
