Components in the valve train are subject to high loads at changing temperatures. Controlled by the camshaft, actuation takes place via the rocker arms on the valves. Clacking/knocking noises, especially when the engine is cold, are signs of worn components in the valve control or incorrectly adjusted valve clearance.
