Piston rings seal the combustion chamber and facilitate heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder wall, whilst the oil scraper ring ensures even lubrication. Damaged rings cause insufficient compression, loss of power, increased oil consumption and unusual engine noise. Worn rings should be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the cylinder bores.
