Porsche 944 & 944 Turbo Water Pump, Timing Belt & Idler Pulley Kit
Porsche 944 Water Pump Replacement – A Quick Workshop Look
Replacing the water pump on a Porsche 944 is one of the most important maintenance jobs you can carry out. The water pump is driven by the timing belt, so if you're already stripping the front of the engine, it's the ideal opportunity to replace the timing belt, idler pulleys and tensioning components at the same time.
In this quick workshop video, I show one of the key stages of fitting a new water pump to a Porsche 944. Although it's only a short clip, it gives you an idea of the work involved and why it's worth doing the job properly.

Why replace the water pump?
Over time, the water pump bearings and seals wear, eventually leading to coolant leaks or bearing failure. Ignoring the signs can leave you stranded or, in the worst case, cause timing belt issues if the pump begins to seize.
Common symptoms include:
-
Coolant leaking from the front of the engine
-
Bearing noise or roughness
-
Engine overheating
-
Coolant stains around the water pump housing
Replace the timing belt while you're there
Because the timing belt has to be removed to replace the water pump, most Porsche specialists recommend replacing the belt and inspecting (or replacing) the idler pulleys and tensioners at the same time. It saves both time and money compared with carrying out the jobs separately.
